My students need classroom materials like scissors, blocks, buzzers, a doorbell and a visual timer for small group and whole group active engagement activities.
Our state has recently felt the effects of not only the oil and gas downturn, but also of the reduction of coal production. We are bracing ourselves for a large reduction in state and district funding in the upcoming school year(s) with the knowledge and desire to still meet student needs. These reductions have already hit my school district hard with the closure of 5 schools in the last 2 years, including the school I have taught at for the past 16 years.
The fall of 2018 will be the beginning of my new professional adventure at one of our city's middle schools.
This is an exciting, sad, and overwhelming feeling all at one time! It will be a challenge to incorporate all of the teaching strategies (technology, partner work, singing songs, active engagement, etc) I loved in my elementary classroom to my 6th grade language arts students (over 100 of them!). It is a challenge I am up for!
Students are looking for a safe, comfortable environment that they are excited to a part of each day! I'm looking forward to providing this experience for my 6th grade students!
My Project
I will be moving from 3rd grade to 6th grade this upcoming school year! In the past, I have made it a mission for my students to be active, engaged learners, and I want to continue this with my middle school students. I know some of the techniques I have used in the past will carry over to my new group of students, but I also know I will need some new tricks in my bag!
In order to keep my students on their toes, I need to begin the process of gathering materials to ensure my students are involved and engaged in their learning!
I am hoping these different items will get my students excited to learn!
I am requesting color timers and buzzers along with a remote control doorbell to give my students visual and auditory cues for group work. These materials will allow students to tell me when they're done and also for me to call them back together. I am also requesting big kid scissors for projects, because the scissors I previously had were made for 3rd graders. The jenga pieces will be used for small group review games, especially vocabulary work work! Finally, the magnetic curtain rod will be used to easily display and move anchor charts for learning, game rules, etc.
Thank you so much for supporting me in my new professional journey in the middle school!
