I have to tell you all about my amazing girls on the varsity volleyball team. The volleyball team I coach is made up of 20 young girls who are driven, smart, ambitious and unfortunately many are underprivileged. These girls truly love volleyball and playing sports in general. Volleyball has been a savior for many of these girls. It is an after school activity that has created a place where these girls can create and build on friendships, can stay away from their troubled neighborhoods and be safe.
It is with sadness that I am writing this because I only have old, worn volleyballs for tryouts and practices.
In a team of 20 girls, who want to play competitively and love playing volleyball, old, worn volleyballs are simply not good enough. There are 48 girls who signed up for tryouts and there isn't one ball that is considered regulation size. These girls are willing to spend their hard earned money to buy shorts, sneakers, and t-shirts so that they are prepared for practice. Many of them have quit their after school jobs to make sure they have the time to give their all to their volleyball team and succeed.
My veteran players and the new girls trying out will need multiple balls to make it an effective and productive tryout and practice. With only a few balls, practices are not able to be productive, as time is wasted on waiting to get a ball. There are only so many drills and activities that can be done with the few balls we currently have.
Making the best of the short amount of time we have for practices will be possible with more balls.
I can only imagine how much better each player will get if they are constantly touching a ball and improving on their consistency, whether it is serving, setting, or passing with a partner or alone. I know they would be so grateful and happy to see that others care enough to make a difference in their lives.
