My students are amazing. They are eager to learn, participate in student-centered project-based learning, they ask thoughtful inquisitive questions and show up engaged despite many of them facing challenges at home. We are a large rural town in Vermont, larger than most of the smaller rural towns that surround us, yet not a city. We have a large percentage of student who transition in and out of our district. Our district is an extremely diverse socio-economic rural community in Vermont. Many of my students face challenges at home yet, they arrive at school each day ready to learn. We have faced budget challenges in recent years, yet the students still strive for success.
Making a difference in the middle.
I love teaching middle school, because middle school students are special and unique. My students often come to me as meek, shy, tiny sixth graders and leave taller than me, outspoken abstract thinkers prepared for the future. I love watching the amazingness of my students at the middle level. Watching them learn from navigating the world of academics, social and personal goals. Middle school students are the best!
We recently completed a project in which students created imovies "reporting" from the American Revolution. Students learned about different events of the American Revolution, found images relating to the event, researched the events, created scripts, and then creating "reporting" from the different events using the green screen. We had to borrow the green screen and we were extremely limited in when we could borrow it and also how many students were able to access it at a time.
Having our own green screen will enable students to do more projects using green screen technology to demonstrate their learning.
It would be amazing. Students have asked to do more projects like this to meet their learning. It teaches them about the subject as well as working in groups, editing technology and how to create a successful video presentation.
