I teach English reading and writing skills to 9th and 10th-grade students in a suburban area that brings all the benefits of country and town living to our lives. My students are very special to me. At this time in their lives, many have endured more hardships than they should ever have to. Several of my students have free and reduced breakfast and lunch meal plans. Many deals with the reality of health issues and loss of loved ones on a daily basis.
My students have been able to find their voice through reading and writing throughout the semester.
They teach me just as much as I teach them. Despite the situations they go through on a daily basis, it never fails that they are ready to engage with the lesson for the day. I want to be able to provide for my students the love, support, and knowledge that they also give me each and every day.
My Project
My students need modern, award-winning novels that pertain more to real-life situations. I have found that with these types of books, my more reluctant readers will latch on and really want to read to the very end to find out what happens.
Having books that they want to dive into opens the door for more meaningful discussions.
Students can analyze themes that they can relate to in their own lives and really make connections to the text. The knowledge my students get from reading can also help bridge conversations with others, opening the lines of better communication. Reading can help them broaden their perspectives on ideas and force them to think critically, challenging them to think for themselves.
