Live Dance Performance At The Brooklyn Academy Of Music
The cost of a trip to a performance of "Underground" and a talk with the artists afterwards is $431, including <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
The Brooklyn Academy of Music is offering a daytime performance series open to students. In November they are having a performance of the David Dorfman Company's latest piece, "Underground". I would like to bring a group of my dance students and a class of music students to go see the performance. Fifty students total will be invited to attend the performance. Brooklyn Academy of Music also provides a guest artist who comes into the classroom and provides a workshop with the students prior to the performance.
I feel that this is invaluable to my student's, because they can see what contemporary modern dance is live on stage. They also will get the opportunity to meet a real professional dancer and be taught by them in a workshop, prior to the performance. In addition, David Dorfam and the company members will provide a "talk back" after the performance, so the students can ask questions about the piece as well as dabble in the process a choreographer goes through to make a dance piece.
My school is located in Downtown Brooklyn and is a title one school. Many of my students have jobs and babies that make it difficult to experience live performance because of financial limitations. While I have shown them many dance companies on video, nothing beats a live performance.
I think the combined experience of having a guest artist teach a lesson to my students, seeing live performance in a beautiful theater, and speaking with the company members and choreographer will give my students an experience of a life time. Who knows maybe one of them will be the next Alvin Ailey or Pearl Primus?
