My students need LittleBits to help them discover that they are already scientists, inventors, problem solvers, and artists when they learn by exploring.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 2nd-grade kids are capable, creative, and eager to learn new things. PLAY IS A POWERFUL TEACHER. However, our school district does not have the funds to devote to purchasing hands-on coding or STEAM programs that will enable students to play, build, and explore at a higher level. I feel that my students will use their imagination to tackle difficult tasks when given the motivation and opportunity.
My students thrive when they are learning through playing, creating, and inventing!
I encourage my students to tell about WHAT they are doing, WHY they are doing it, and WHY it is important. I am so proud of them when they apply what they have learned to new situations and challenge themselves to solve problems. They LOVE hands-on building and creating STEAM projects from recycled materials. I encourage them to collaborate, to develop solutions to problems, to critique their work, to revise it, and then to celebrate their successes.
My Project
Do you like to PLAY? I want to empower kids in my class to be creators and inventors through hands-on challenges. LittleBits can help me do this. They are small, colorful, electric modules that snap together with magnets. LittleBits are like electronic LEGO components that have specific functions. My students will use the color-coded pieces that come in the kit: power sources, motors, dimmers, LED lights, branches, pulses, wires. They will be able to build just about anything with them in minutes! These LittleBits will inspire kids to PLAY with lights, sounds, and sensors without having any background in engineering.
My goal is to use LittleBits to put the power of engineers into my students, so they will understand technology at a simple level while building and designing projects that are exciting to them!
My students will be encouraged to be innovative while working collaboratively, creatively, thinking critically, and solving problems that are essential for 21st Century learners. Some of the projects that I am envisioning for students are:
- Using Legos, K’NEX, or toy figurines with LittleBits to MAKE SOMETHING that DOES SOMETHING!
- Building a robot that lights up with STEAM supplies
- Making a character or contraption that moves and makes noises
- Solving real-world problems from our NG Science Standards or Common Core curriculum
- Designing anything a child’s imagination can conceive in their “mind’s eye”
I want to foster a basic love of learning and a desire to think and create by integrating art with LittleBits projects, so my student will develop inventive approaches to real-world problems. Please help to provide the LittleBits technology that will nurture my students’ imaginations while they PLAY and LEARN!
