Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in New Haven, CT. The majority of the students served by this program are recent immigrants from all over the globe. Some have fled life in prostitution, gang violence, and war. Most need to heal from trauma.
I teach them musicianship.
I empower them to take control of their lives and tell their story through music. I have watched boys who have spent five years in refugee camps begin their first steps in "rocking out" on electric guitar. I have seen a boy whose brother had just been killed by gang violence in Puerto Rico smile as he taught our principal to play some chords. I seek to work the same restorative healing through a string orchestra program and larger rock course using more than just guitars.
My Project
This is a small wish list that will help my kids make great music! Having enough headphones, XLR cables and the keyboard adapters makes the day go so much smoother. The Recording Arts classes and the LKR Modern Band classes use the same equipment 4 hours a day all week long. It wears out.
We need basic parts to keep our recording studio functional.
Our laptops don't have batteries that work anymore and we have to unplug a mouse or keyboard to plug in our midi keyboards. it becomes very frustrating to students who are in the flow of creating.
