Little Things Make a Big Difference: Simple Supplies for Class
Help me give my students markers, post-its, paper, highlighters, pens, pencils, tape, file labels, tissues, paper towels, and cleaning products to actively engage with our reading and writing, and stay healthy while doing it!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach the “bookends” of high school--seniors and freshmen. My students are a diverse bunch that attend an urban, arts-focused high school. In addition to being extraordinarily talented artists, they are engaged and gifted scholars.
My students amaze me every day with the sheer talent they possess.
But, we face many of the same challenges as other urban schools, including limited resources.
Students often are not as confident when it comes to reading and writing. Many students fear failure and will shut down when faced with a new, unfamiliar challenge. I work to create the most positive environment possible so that each of my students feels safe, validated, and ready to learn.
My Project
These basic classroom supplies: highlighters, paper, posters, tape, pens, pencils, markers, etc., will help my students more deeply engage with our class work and the texts with which we are working. We will read more deeply, and annotate as we read with post its.
These supplies will help my students write in our writing workshops, peer-edit writing pieces, create anchor charts to explore our reading and writing, and ask questions and connect to literature on a deeper level.
My students will make connections to the text and to the world around us, and craft individual and group responses to literature.
The cleaning supplies (paper towels, tissues, cleansing wipes) will transform our old and institutional classroom into a warm and healthy space that is inviting and encourages students to feel comfortable and focus on learning.
These school supplies will transform my classroom into an efficient, productive, and healthy space. My students will feel welcome, ready to learn, and be prepared to do "the heavy lifting" of learning.
These supplies will allow me to maintain a healthy space and provide the tools my students need to facilitate learning. Many of my students cannot provide these supplies for themselves, let alone contribute extra to our classroom. These school supplies will give us the freedom to focus solely on student learning.
