Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My state pre-K classroom consists of 40 ESL students. Based on free-lunch eligibility, all of them are considered to be "at-risk" students living at or below the poverty level. I believe it is important for these students to experience inquiry-based science projects. Early exposure to scientific inquiry will spark their predisposition to ask and find answers
to many authentic, child-generated questions. Since scientific inquiry forms the backbone to all question-asking and problem solving skills across all learning domains, I want to add a strong science component to my curriculum. Inquiry, observation, hypothesis-making, testing, data collecting, and discussion all present opportunities for my little second language learners to read, write about, listen to, and discuss questions about their world in an organized, predictable way.
I am requesting these science kits to provide a hands-on, minds-on, interactive way for my students to explore the world, to stimulate authentic question-asking, and to provide them with the tools, skills, and scientific techniques to answer them.
