This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from a low income/high-poverty part of the city where they need opportunities to succeed. Four- and five-year-old children need to start their financial literacy journey early.
I teach at a Title I school in Virginia where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch, Many of them do not have access to educational materials at home.
My students are eager to learn. They love earning treats. I think it would be great if they could earn, save. and buy them.
My Project
In my classroom students are ages 4 and 5. They can earn stickers and when then have 5 they can go to the treasure box.
I would like to close out the school year by making a real world connection to money, and start building their financial literacy skills.
We will read the books to build background experience as an introduction to saving and spending. They will earn the plastic coins for doing a job and/or being a model citizen. Then they will be able to use their plastic coins to purchase the snacks I requested. We started our school year strong and we need to finish strong.
