Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In a classroom full of three-year-olds, there is never a dull moment! My students are full of joy and energy. My classroom is in a Title 1 school, and all of the students in my class are labeled as Special Education students. As three-year-olds, this is the first time in school and away from their parents for most of my students.
As this is the first school experience for all of my students, I strive to make my classroom a place where they experience success, feel included, and have FUN!
This year the students in my classroom where greatly affected by Hurricane Harvey. Many lost their homes and were displaced, creating a great deal of stress in their lives. Many of the items that my students use each day in the classroom were damaged as a result of the storm. Despite these challenges, my students come to school each day eager to learn and grow.
My Project
In a classroom full of three-year-olds, hands on learning is so incredibly important. The little learners in my classroom learn best by touching and doing. They love to make art, and the joy that they get from their discoveries is contagious!
Art is such an important part of a preschool classroom because it promotes creativity, builds fine motor skills, encourages the use of language to communicate, and helps develop problem-solving skills.
At the beginning of this year, our area was hit incredibly hard by Hurricane Harvey, displacing many of my students and their families. This has caused a great deal of upheaval and stress in the lives of my students, many of whom do not understand what has happened. Many of my students are still struggling to cope with the changes that the storm brought to their lives. Through art, my students will have an avenue to express and explore their feelings safely.
The easel I've requested will give my students endless opportunity for creativity. They can paint on paper, on the easel itself, or even use dry erase markers to draw a picture. Working in the vertical plane on the easel is also incredibly important for the fine motor development of my little students. Since they tend to get messy while creating, I have requested smocks to help keep the mess contained somewhat. The paintbrushes and messy mats will give my students materials with which to create. With your help, I might just discover the next famous artist right here in my classroom!
