Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have been an elementary school teacher for over twenty-five years and have seen educational practices come and go. "New" Math, CRT's, whole language, intensive phonics, direct instruction and numerous others have all been part of our vocabulary over the years. Reading, writing and math have always been given top priority, and rightfully so, but what has happened to developing the creative side of our students? Are we sacrificing the Arts for the academic? I would like to see the goal be that of a well-rounded individual: A writer, reader, a worker of numbers as well as a person who has an appreciation of color and texture and a sense of rhythm and musical tones.
As I looked around my Kindergarten classroom here at the Otis School and began to set up the areas that the children will work in this year, I realized that materials for Art and Music were lacking. Unfortunately funds are lacking at the local level, so materials for Art and Music are understandably not a priority. So I turn to you and request your help as I try to bring the Arts to my young students.
I would like to update the Art Center so that my students can use their imagination to produce original art to express their ideas and add illustrations to the books the love to create. Materials that I am in need of at this time are, an easel, smocks, powdered paints, paint cups, pastels, and watercolor paper.
Rhythm and movement are important areas of development for young children. I have found that when I teach phonics and early reading skills through chants, songs and movement, the children respond eagarly and the retention of the material is increased. I would like a CD player, various CD's of children's music and a set of musical/rhymthm instruments.
At this time when academics is the priority, it is my hope that someone help me balance the education of my young students by giving them the opportunity of self expressin through Art and Music. My students and I would be forever grateful.
