My Students

Our energetic, young first graders are full of imagination and inquisitiveness. They are working hard to develop foundational literacy skills so they can move on to read all the stories, poems, and informational texts in our classroom and school libraries.

We are an urban school.

The majority of students in our class are English language learners of diverse origins and socioeconomic backgrounds. Many receive free or reduced-price lunch. We are a full-inclusion school; some of our students have special learning needs.

My Project

Having a class set of these classic Itty Bitty Phonics Readers on hand will be a great supplement to our core phonemic awareness and phonics lessons. We will use them in conjunction with regular, structured phonics instruction. The book set contains one book for each letter sound, with stories told and illustrated in endearing and comical ways to engage young, aspiring readers. These books will greatly benefit particularly those students who need extra reading support, including our many English learners. Guided reading of these phonics readers will help deepen students' understanding of letter-sound correspondence, unlocking the secrets of foundational reading skills.
