My students need sight word magnets, primary composition books, magnetic letters, and pencils to increase their independence in learning, practicing, and obtaining literacy skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have a classroom full of exuberant Kindergartners. They are energetic, fun-loving, and creative. Some of them dance all over the school from standing in the bathroom line to outside on the playground during recess. Others are jokesters that like to tell jokes and pull pranks on their friends. There are also some that love to write, read, act, play, and tell stories.
However, all of them are artists and love to create art!
They live to express themselves artistically.
My Project
For this project, I wanted to focus on literacy and organizational tools for the classroom. Literacy is one of the biggest focuses of the school year, and I want to ensure that my students have every opportunity to learn and practice those skills both with me and independent of me as well.
By the time children go to first grade, they should know at the very least 20 sight words.
However, in communities similar to the one in which I teach, children do not have as much access as their peers in other areas and end up behind by thousands of words when they eventually graduate 8th grade.
The sight word magnets and classroom magnetic letter kit will enable students to have literacy small groups or simply practice their words when they finish work early. The primary composition books will give them the opportunity to journal regularly and build up fine motor skills as well as literacy skills. They go through pencils in droves, especially in the beginning of the year, so the jumbo pencils will add to the stash that will definitely be replenished throughout the year. The paper trays, magnetic folders, and storage caddies will give the students independent access to writing work and materials on a daily basis. I hope that you can help them become little literacy learners!
