Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to read, and as soon as they have finished their work they ask, "Maestra, can I get a book?!" Right now we do not have a classroom library from which they can choose a book and sit to read comfortably. We have some books, but nowhere to put them.
Our school is a public, Title I, elementary school in an urban area.
I have forty-five incredible first graders this year between my two classes. We are a dual-immersion (Spanish-English) school, and our students switch between teachers in the middle of the day, so that half of their day is instruction in Spanish with one teacher and half is instruction in English with the other. We have Spanish speakers, English speakers and truly bilingual students together in a program to foster true bilingualism and bi-literacy. Beyond our commitment to bilingualism, we are an Expeditionary Learning school, which emphasizes interdisciplinary learning focused on a particular unit (primarily science and social studies).
My Project
In first grade, students learn to read, and their world opens up. With each important skill they learn, they improve a reading level and read through incredible amounts of books in practice. This library will give students the ability to find a book at their appropriate reading level. They can also browse through themes they are interested in which allows them to indulge their imaginations while getting substantial practice and exposure to reading that they need.
My classroom has few shelves, and they are not adequate for a student library. These smaller shelves and organized leveled reading libraries will provide a comfortable library that my students can reach and use independently. The little rug is a cozy place that encourages them to sit and read, and the round table is a perfect place to develop their reading comprehension with reflections after each story.
Furniture to create a student-centered library in our classroom, will give my students a safe and comfortable space to engage in reading.
Right now, the books are mixed together and are not separated by theme or reading level. Often students choose a book that is not at the right level; but if they could, their love for reading and their literacy would blossom!
