My students need supplemental reading materials that are actually at their level, as they are IEP students with very diverse reading levels and needs.
I am a second grade teacher in an inner city school in Pennsylvania. The students live in a high-need community, many in poverty.
The many struggles that my students face at home pour over into the classroom. Many times there is no parental figure at home and my children are faced with the enormous challenge of not only raising themselves but their brothers, sisters, and other family members also. Due to the many burdens of their home life, school takes and back seat and that is reflected in the classroom. The children have difficulty with basic concepts of reading and most are below level reading at only a kindergarten level. All of this hardship for only a second grader.
With my class having such diverse abilities, it seems like focus is on the children who can, not those who cannot. The school district supplies materials for those who are on grade level but neglect those who are truly in need. If my class received these books it will be the building block needed to surge them into a life and love of reading.
You will make it possible for my students to feel like a success for once instead of a failure. Your help will ensure that my students will be exposed to a learning path of enrichment and a chance to achieve.
