My students need access to inspirational books about women, Civil Rights icons, and diverse leaders so they can check them out from the school library.

Every day in our school library media center, I see our bright and energetic students full of a desire to learn more about the world around them.
In my position as Library Media Specialist, I do everything in my power to help these inquisitive minds have access to the tools to assist in that desire to learn.
Despite this love of learning and interest in reading and technology, due to our urban location and the personal backgrounds of some of our students, they aren't always afforded the same advantages that other students and school districts might have. Our elementary school is almost 100 years old and is a Title One school in a low income area. However, despite the financial difficulties that many of our students and our school district deal with, these children do not let this distract from their desire to learn all they can. Furthermore, our faculty and staff are dedicated to helping our students become the best learners and people they can be. This has been proven by our school's ability to meet state educational standards and reach full accreditation.
Every week, students come to the media center to have literacy lessons and check out books to read. They are allowed to choose fiction or non-fiction books, and are allowed to pick books to assist them with a research project or for personal enjoyment. Although we have a lot of great books to choose from, students really love to choose books from the biography section. They like learning about famous people of both the past and the present. The books I am requesting would introduce the students to inspirational leaders of diverse backgrounds. I also want to introduce the students to different potential career choices: there are more career choices than basketball player and princess! If we were able to increase our inventory of these titles, students would be able to foster their love of reading and get the great personal enjoyment that comes from reading a book for pleasure.
Donations to this project will greatly improve our school library by giving the students more access to books they love and books that can inspire.
Our struggling readers can improve their comprehension, fluency, and literacy skills by having access to titles they are interested in reading. Students shouldn't be deprived of things that pique their interest in learning simply because their school district can't always afford to get materials they need. Therefore, any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
