I am volunteering my time in the afternoon to teach guitar to 25 children. About half of these kids are in special education, and this is the one activity where they start off on the same level as their peers. This is a poor rural community.
There are very few after school enrichment activities in this county. Unless they play football or basketball, there really is not much available for the students. The area is plagued with high rates of drug and alcohol abuse, and teen suicide is an ongoing problem. I want the kids to have something that they can enjoy for the rest of their lives.
As soon as I announced that I was going to give lessons, the kids were knocking the door down to ask questions and get applications. So what do I need to do to help these kids build a lifelong love of playing music?
We give free Guitar Lessons! I hope that I will be able to provide any child that wants to learn with a chance. I also would like to have the recorder so that they could hear what great music they are making. Little Kids Rock encourages students to write music as well as play, and a good quality recording machine would be wonderful.
I have a dream that this area is going to become renowned for the fantastic musicians it produces. I have kids and parents and grandparents who are excited, and with your help, we are going to do some incredible things. Thank you in advance.
