Our early childhood school is now in its 12th year serving the community. In our PreK class, that means over 180 students have come and gone from this classroom. Along with that, many other students have called our room home for enrichment classes, after-school programs, and summer camp.
Families send their precious children to our class every day, for us to help them take those first steps towards accomplishing great feats.
Children make this room their home for however long they stay and miss it dearly when they move on. It's something we take pride in, and we hope to continue doing what we love to do and that nurtures their love of learning.
I've been teaching, at my first and current school, for seven years. No matter who enters through that door, they are part of our school family. I hope to provide them with the absolute best education we can offer.
My Project
The gift of literacy is a gift that sparks an endless cycle of giving. It takes a village to raise a child and our school hopes to take the initiative to take an active role in helping, not only the families in our school, but the families all over out community to become readers.
In 2016, out of 3,200 children's books published in the United States, only 7% featured Asian children - yet there are 17 million Asian Americans in this country.
Representation matters in movies, television, and for our kids, the books they read. I am requesting two little free libraries to place in our playground and a local park near our school. I hope to stock the Little Free Libraries with books that are classics as well as books that represent the children who live in the community. Books with diverse characters, as well as books from authors and illustrators of color so our children can say: I See Me.
We always push our families to read to their students, never taking into consideration if they have access to books or not. It's easy to recommend that they visit the public library, however, visiting one may be inconvenient to our families and books that represent them are lacking in the public library system.
My goal is to get more books into the hands of the children in the community, the same community I grew up in, which holds a very special place in my heart. If there is a family that didn't have access to books before and is now able to take home books for their child, this project will be a huge success. Your support will go towards building a community that will appreciate the gift of literacy, and in the long run, it will pay off greatly.
