My inner city classroom is comprised of approximately 25 students from low socio-economic backgrounds. A large percentage of my students' families are unable to provide their children with basic daily necessities. These boys and girls come to school hungry, tired, and without clean clothes, bookbags, school supplies, etc.
It amazes me that despite their home environment and family circumstances my students come to school each morning eager to be there and learn.
School is a safe place for them and I want to do everything possible to create a positive, comfortable, and engaging environment for them to thrive in.
My Project
My classroom is opening a mini-society soon. The students have created their own society named Rock and Roll Ville. We have created our own society name, flag, currency, and just last week we voted for a class mayor. The conclusion of our society will be at the end of May. The kids will each open their own business at our "Grand Opening Celebration". The kids will have a goal to make the largest profit possible with their businesses. The products selected in this project will allow some of the kids a better opportunity to run a business with fantastic supplies. Sure to be a hit will be the business with the wooden cars. One business will also be utilizing the beads and wax string to make jewelry. Another business will sell flags. A fourth business will be selling plants with the pots and creative stickers. The kids will be thrilled to have these new products.
