My Students

Empathetic, creative, and enthusiastic are just some words to describe our students. As a teacher in a low income, high poverty school district, our students are faced with many challenges that other students will never experience. They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically.

We are in the process of acquiring items for our Makerspace room in order to expose our students to STEM activities.

We want to see our students making, learning, exploring and sharing in order for them to be able to fulfill their potential in STEM careers. We see first hand how important STEM education is for low-income students in our area. It is the key to careers in some of the most rapidly growing and high paying fields in this part of the nation.

My Project

Science is a such a great subject for students to explore, experiment, and learn how their world and the world relate. I want our students to be able to feel like they are true scientists. Science teachers are obligated to provide students with safer and appropriate eye protection with safety glasses/goggles. Students being able to use a compass opens doors to being able to use more complicated tools in the STEM world.

In order for our students to be able to participate with hands-on learning that is emphasized in the Next Generation Science Standards, they need to know that safety is key.

They also need to know how to use different types of tools. Compasses may seem outdated in today’s world of MapQuest and GPS devices. Students knowing how to use this simple tool is still a valuable skill, and more importantly gives them a practical way to understand and relate to the cardinal directions.
