Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach thirty-four 5th graders in an elementary school in Oklahoma City. The students in our school are 100% free breakfast and lunches. They are from an extremely low socioeconomic area, but are eager to learn. My students are special because they are all similar with the same cultural background. English is their second language but I never tire of their accent! They are already teaching me more than I could ever teach them. They are creative, special, grateful, and happy.
I was born in Texas, and as a Mexican American, I relate to them and feel a special bond to them as a group.
My students have so many needs that school supplies, uniforms, and books are all put on the back burner in their homes. However, I have seen them time and time again share pencils, crayons, and markers with those in our class who don't have any! I feel blessed to teach this special class this year.
My Project
My students have already come a long way from the first few weeks back in August, but they still have so many needs! We need more, and newer books for our very small classroom library and markers for new projects as we expand our knowledge in science and social studies. If this project is funded, my students are going to love the alternative seating! My students perform best when they are allowed to sit by themselves or in a different area in the room. The alternative seating will also provide a place for my students to learn how to make choices on their own.
My students have independent silent reading every single morning for twenty minutes and I would love for them to be excited about new books to choose!
They will also be able to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
