Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Teaching kids who struggle to read is both the most rewarding and most challenging part of my daily work as a special education teacher. I work each day with small groups of kids from Kindergarten to 2nd grade. Most of my 1st and 2nd grade are sent to work with me because they are not yet able to decode (sound out the words on the page) which keeps them from doing a lot of their regular classwork.
Once my students can decode words, it's like they are taking off in their airplane -- they are no longer learning to read, but they are reading to learn!
However, for some students it can be more challenging to take flight than others. The older students get, the harder it is to move them to grade level. This is why it's my priority to get my students reading in their time working with me.
My Project
This set of workbooks and decodable readers are an essential component to the Recipe for Reading program. Recipe for Reading is a program specifically designed to teach kids who are struggling with the traditional way of learning to read. I have the teacher's guide and a couple of books from the Alphabet Series, but that is not enough to give my students the full systematic program that was intended by Recipe for Reading.
With this set of workbooks and decodable readers, I can give my kids a fair shot at learning to read and catching up with their peers academically.
Research shows that certain multi-sensory literacy programs, when done properly, can make all the difference for kids who have dyslexia and other visual, motor, or auditory needs related to reading. My students already have such a strong desire to read independently and I'm so honored and excited to help them get there!
