My students need a Cricut Machine, cartridges, and a cutting mat.
"Financial literacy is a step-by-step process. It begins in childhood and continues throughout a person's life. Instilling the financial-literacy message in children is especially important, because they will carry it for the rest of their lives." G. Carl My TK's are learning this lesson early.
Our students come from very low-income families; the majority are living with 2-3 families in a single apartment.
Many of the parents are working more than one job just to survive. The local food bank delivers backpacks of food to the kids so they have food for weekends. During the week, we ensure every child has a minimum of two meals to include school breakfast and school lunch.
Some of our families have grown up on rancheros deep in Mexico and did not attend school at all; others grew up in the United States but left school in junior high or high school. In spite of these challenges, having realized what lack of education poses in terms of adversities students and their families are more focused, not only on learning but on going to college!
Most of our students are living so far the poverty level that they don't see money to spend for wants, only necessities. So much so that when they are older and have money to spend on their own, they don't know how to manage it wisely - learning how to balance needs and wants.
We are requesting a Cricut Machine, cartridges, and a cutting mat. In our Transitional Kindergarten class, our students will learn to use a token economy system to balance purchasing needs such as pencils and crayons as well as wants such as special die cuts to use in their writing, math projects, and just for fun.
Many of our students enter school far behind the starting line.
We work hard to give them every advantage to bring them to the same level as their peers. Together we can equalize the great education race.
