Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Despite all the adversity they face, my students are always motivated and ready to learn. Unfortunately, my students are growing up in a neighborhood where there is very little inspiration. In hopes of my students not falling into the negativity they are surrounded by, I do my best to maintain a welcoming, safe, and inspiring classroom environment.

Since we have limited resources offered in our school, it is difficult to keep lessons engaging for them.

The majority of my students are English Learners. Although they have not fully mastered the English language, time and time again, my students work hard to excel academically. Therefore, they deserve to have the resources needed to attain a higher level education.

My Project

As a teacher in a Title I school, teaching art is difficult because of the limited resources we are provided with. Although it is hard, my goal is to keep teaching and implementing art into our curriculum because it is extremely important. In Kindergarten, children are just beginning to develop skills like self-expression, creativity, and hand-eye coordination. Art encourages my students to be creative, as they use different types of art media such as watercolor paints, oil pastels, markers, and construction paper crayons. Art also teaches them to express themselves by discussing their masterpieces with their peers. Since my students are emerging readers and writers, painting, drawing, and coloring give them the opportunity to express themselves in ways others can understand. Not only will they be able to explain their drawings or paintings to others, but students can also share the types of media they used, thus, improving their academic vocabulary. Additionally, according to research, art better strengthens their hand-eye coordination--a skill needed to complete everyday tasks. Giving my students tools such as a paintbrush, thin markers, crayons, and oil pastels develops their grasping skills and keeps them conscious of their eye-guided hand movement.

As my students begin to show more and more interest in art, a box of Crayola crayons and a few bottles of tempera paint are not enough for them to fully experience the amazing world of art.

Watercolor paints, markers, oil pastels, and construction paper crayons will give my students a variety of art tools to use while encouraging self-expression, creativity, and strengthening their hand-eye coordination.
