Little Artists Want to Make Big Brushstrokes

My Project

I teach elementary art at a K-5 school where the population of students is always growing! We are currently overcrowded and waiting for the relief school to open. Due to the large numbers of students, I was employed as the second art teacher, however, I am located in a trailer without a sink or water, which makes working with media like paint very challenging. Imagine teaching 25 Kindergarteners a lesson and having only 5 minutes before the next class which happens to be 30 5th graders. It is nearly impossible to dump out all the dirty paint water from the Kindergarten class and get clean water and brushes for the 5th grade class to use in such a short amount of time, especially because I have to walk everything to the bathroom in order to get access to the water.

By having a supply like the Kwik Stix Solid Tempera Paint Sticks, students get a painting experience with media that looks like paint, but doesn't require water or brushes!

Kwik Stix Paint Sticks are also chunky and short, which are ideal for small hands to grab and hold onto while painting.

For this particular project, I would like for students K-5 to study the beautiful work of Alma Thomas. Alma Thomas was not only a teacher, but she was the first female fine art graduate from Howard University. She was also the first female African American to have her artwork on display in The Whitney Museum in New York. Her work was as an abstract artist is colorful and inspiring. For this project, I have selected two children's books that would serve as mentor texts for the project. They would provide history and context as well as pictures of Alma Thomas's art.
