Our high school is a medium sized public school that has had a good reputation for academics as well as athletics. Because of the changing demographics in the district, we need to include more novels that address our population. We need to change with the times and needs of our students.

Much of what we teach has been stripped of its power because of being politically correct. For the Advanced Placement classes the lack of import can be deadly to the learning experience. "Bless Me, Ultima" is a novel written about today by a man from New Mexico about the Mexican American culture. It is a coming of age story that is both funny and heartrending. It is a story that they young adult reader can "get into" while giving the literary muscle needed to help the students mature in their literary abilities. We need copies of the novel so that the students can have a broader learning experience than the limited number of novel the district now has.

Unfortunately we are not a rich district; in fact, our financial situation is a point of concern for many. Thus we need some help in obtaining things like novels which are not high on the administrative lists. Including these novels will open the pre-AP students to another time and another genre, one that will open their minds to new ideas.

Your help is needed to give these young minds a new perspective to a world outside of our town. There are no pine trees in our part of the country, and there are other cultures unknown to our students. Help us to open up the world through literature.
