Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Let's give my students something to read and write about! This fall will be my third year at my school, which is located in a high-need community. I will be teaching a 3rd grade class full of eager readers and writers.

My school is fortunate to have a wide range of leveled chapter books for the students. However, we do not have a lot of picture books to support their work as readers and writers. If there is a particular title that I want to use in the class to illustrate a writing quality or reading skill, I often have to either borrow it from the public library (which means we can only have it for a short amount of time) or purchase it myself (which can become expensive).

What a difference it would make if my students could have a permanent lending library of mentor texts for their reading and writing in our classroom! I have carefully selected very specific book titles that would strengthen my students' writing skills and support them as readers reading with meaning.

Your help will make it possible for my students to grow as strong readers and writers. You would also foster their independence as learners as these books will be available to them in our classroom library to refer to time and time again. You may just help cultivate a future Caldecott Medal award-winning author!
