My Language Arts students come to me with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Many of my students come from low income families and do not have as much access to good, positive, contemporary literature. Additionally, students within my classroom and school community do not always have sustained opportunities to explore different types of diversity issues.
These amazing students are eager to learn and to explore people, places, ideas, etc.
that exist outside the community. There eagerness is an untapped resource with tremendous potential. Therefore, they need to have access to materials that help them in their exploration, while still embracing the community culture and expectations.
My Language Arts students will benefit tremendously from books like Counting by 7s and Wonder. These inspiring books will foster an understanding of diversity, an avenue for exploring empathy, and developing an awareness of strategies to overcome life's challenges.
The inspiring messages within the novels, Counting by 7s and Wonder, represent a magnificent opportunity to foster empathy, encourage compassion, and embrace challenges. These skills are a struggle for many of my students, who are caught up in Social Media and instant gratification. Not only will these novels help build character, they will also provide opportunities for improved learning in reading comprehension and critical thinking skills, which are named as necessary skills in the 21st Century. Ultimately, the donations that provide for these novels will provide a positive possible teaching moment to educate the mind and the character of each student.
