Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The fifth graders of our school are a diverse group. Many speak a second language. Most qualify for free or reduced lunch. All are students with loads of potential.
Our elementary school is a traditionally low performing elementary school that is in the process of turning around.
It resides in a strong community full of devoted families.
The fifth graders come to school everyday ready to learn. They have dreams for their future and are working to make sure those can come true.
My Project
Read alouds draw kids into rich literature and help them access worlds that they may never otherwise get to experience. The books in this project are all wonderful texts that I want to use to read aloud to my students.
These books will increase my students love of reading as they get to get lost in strong texts.
I will also use them as mentor texts for my students to use as examples of excellent writing. These examples are essential for them to model their own writing after.
One example of how I plan on using these resources is the book Battle Bunny. It is a fun book where they author's made a silly book called Birthday Bunny. They then wrote over each page to turn it into a totally different book called Battle Bunny. I plan on reading this book to my students and then have them do this with one of their own books that they have written. This requires a high level of thinking as they have to analyze what is currently written and determine a new way to remake the story.
