My 6th-grade students from Westwood, NJ are currently enrolled in my Language Arts resource room. Each of these students has an IEP specific to their learning disability. Each day, we share stories about what we've read, books we recommend, and books we want to read in the future!
Having students make book recommendations allows them to be an active participant in their learning!
However, we currently share a room (and budget) with six other teachers so it is difficult to get a hold of resources throughout the year. Regardless, we make the best of the situation and carry on!
My Project
Who doesn't love a good picture book? With each unit I teach, picture books are ESSENTIAL. They are a versatile, effective teaching tool that I use to demonstrate reading and writing skills all year long. Picture books hold a place of their own, aside from the growing popularity of illustrated and graphic novels. In particular, my resource students with special needs can benefit from the added visual representation a picture book can provide.
Picture books level the playing field.
My students who are both attention and communication impaired use these books to do deep inference and interpretation during our mini-lessons. Occasionally, I buy these books as I come across them in my own practice. However, this project is a bit more near and dear to my heart, being that ALL of my students helped to compile this list of books. Your donation will help my class to ENGAGE with these books in their own way.
