Help me give my students Fire HD 8" tablets. They will utilize this tablets for online discussions in our class forum. They will also access a collection of books through these Fire HD 8" tablets.
My students are an amazing diverse group of students. They range in literacy needs and interests from those students who have struggled to find the "right" book to get them hooked on reading to students who tune out the world between the pages of a book.
I have that student who picks up the read aloud that we finished reading in September and has reread it 8 times at least, but he enjoys it and will probably reread it another 4 times.
I have that student who finds a series that he likes, such as the Boxcar Children, and he'll finish 8 books before the end of the week.
And then there's the student who has read a book that he loved, but he struggles to find another book that will fill his literary needs as this previous book did. I offer him several books that are close, and he gets two chapters in, but alas he isn't hooked.
I have students that hang on every word of a read aloud book and love to check out the book we're reading to dart three or four chapters ahead.
Then there's the other readers in my classroom.
My Project
These Fire HD 8 tablets will be utilized in conjunction with free (through the county library system) and purchased books to give students access to a range of books well beyond the walls of our classroom or the school library. Some of these students have moved to our school after being displaced after Hurricane Harvey. Other students have been getting all of their reading needs met out of my classroom as their family resides with friends and neighbors during the Hurricane Harvey repairs on their home. Everyone of these students was disrupted educationally by Hurricane Harvey and the temporary closure of school. These students were left with less academic days and the same amount of material to cover last year in third grade. Now in fourth grade, these students struggle with grade level material due to the time impact of Hurricane Harvey. These Fire HD 8 tablets engage the learner in a way to increase their vocabulary and reading skills.
These Fire HD 8 Tablets will give students access to a whole range of literature from poetry and dramas, to traditional literature from countries around the world, and even current best sellers.
Reluctant readers can easily begin a literary journey on a tablet and spark that interest and love of reading.
These Fire HD 8 tablets will also be used as a vocabulary building tool as students will have access to context clue activities that assist students in growing essential reading comprehension skills.
