This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in Fulton County, in a school that serves more than 60% free and reduced lunch students. There are a lot of students with both reading and math deficits. One of the main reasons why I wanted to go back to the classroom was to have an opportunity to have a direct impact on student achievement, specifically the achievement of minority students.
I have always believed teaching to be a work of heart, this noble profession is a calling and I have joyfully accepted the call to duty.
However, it is of no surprise that this industry has very limited funding and consequently we as teachers spend our personal dollars sponsoring our ideas to enhance our students's learning experiences. For this reason, I have selected to seek financial support from Donors Choose. I am beyond grateful for this online program.
My Project
"Tell me, I'll forget. Show me, I may remember. Involve me and I'll learn" said Benjamin Franklin. As a teacher, I relentlessly consider ways to involve my students in their learning process in an effort to make the information from the standards, the learning processes, and concepts stick for a lifetime. It is very rare that one completely forget an experience that relied upon ones direct involvement and I therefore make my instructional designs participatory.
With the above being said, I have a vision of creating an enrichment program for my students with a literacy and language focus that will be inclusive of art-based, hands-on learning.
Students will have an opportunity to read from different genres of literature book club style. However, this will not be an ordinary experience. Students will read within various styles such as poetry, drama, fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, and science fiction. As we read together, we will work on vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. Additionally, fun hands-on experiences will be embedded into the learning. For example, if we read Charlotte's Web we will create farms and spider webs. If we read The Very Hungary Caterpillar, we will make caterpillars and fruits. If we were to read Stellaluna, we will make bats, caves, their food, etc. This enrichment will encompass every students' interest and they are sure to never forget this unique journey.
