My Students

I work in a Title One school in Alabama with a variety of students enrolled in our school. We are also a Leader in Me school, and we believe that all students can be leaders. Communication is a necessary skill in being a good leader.

My students need to improve their communication skills so they can take a more active role in our school setting.

My students come to me in small groups to learn to articulate their sounds and increase their expressive and receptive language skills in order to be more effective communicators.

My Project

My students need a variety of books that can be paired with communication boards to increase their participation and vocabulary knowledge during story time. They need a variety of seasonal/holiday books to compare and contrast the different seasons. They need art supplies such as paint, paint brushes, painting aprons, foam board, paint trays, drawing paper, and sponge brushes to create scenes from the stories read or to represent the main characters in the story. They will also be able to paint pictures to represent the four seasons. While painting the pictures, or when prompted to retell the stories read to them using the pictures in the books, the students will be encouraged to use vocabulary from the stories. The daily word ladders and Figurative Language in a Jar will be used with older students to provide practice and usage with higher level language skills. The ink and cardstock will be utilized to make vocabulary cards so the students can take them home and demonstrate what they have learned. The Clorox wipes will be used to clean up any spillage following painting.

I can't wait to see my students' vocabulary skills soar as they are actively engaged with the bright books and hands-on, literature based art activities.

When students are excited to learn, they participate more readily and are more focused on what you are trying to teach them. I know these materials will play a huge part in increasing their receptive and expressive language skills to improve their ability to communicate within the school environment, at home, and within the community.
