Help me give my students an opportunity to discuss literature in a low-stakes setting by creating a comfortable space with bean bags and pillow cushions, so they can play literature Jenga.
My students are creative, thoughtful and full of questions! They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions! They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically. Truly, they are my inspiration!
Many students in my classroom come in saying they have difficulty reviewing a novel before a major test or essay because they lack communication skills.
My students attend a Title 1 high school and more than 80% of our students have free and reduced lunch. Each child in my classroom absolutely loves learning, although the method and environment in which they learn best vary greatly. We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are!
My Project
The materials and supplies that I am requesting for my students already have a "home." In other words, I know exactly where everything will go. We just need your help in getting everything through our door! The bean bag and floor cushions will be placed in the back of the classroom and used as a gathering place during mini-lessons and review sessions. The Jenga blocks will be altered by me. I will write literature focus questions on all the blocks to create a low stakes opportunity for my students to discuss their readings. The sticky notes will be used by the students, so that they may create annotations of major symbols, themes, events, and it will also help them track a character's development. The chart paper will be used to create anchor charts that reflect the discussions we have during our review sessions.
The donations to this project will help improve my students' understanding of literature.
By implementing a low stakes discussion session, my students will begin to see themselves as true readers. We will use these materials to aide us in the process of becoming life-long readers and writers.
