There is nothing more captivating than a good story. We have a lot of assignments that use a textbook anthology, but I want to expose them to timeless children's literature. "Little House in the Big Woods" will do that as well as introduce them to life in the United States before their time.
I have 24 third grade students in my classroom in California.
My class is divided equally into boys and girls. They represent different cultures and backgrounds. We have a wonderfully supportive Parent Club. Parents are encouraged to help in the classroom and be an important part of their child's education. Our school is fairly small with about 300 students. We value respect, and doing your best.
My Project
Textbooks provide guidance, but they can't provide a complete education. I want my students to see that reading can be exciting and fun. I want them to be captivated by a good story and reading on their own to see what happens next. We would like to be able to read a novel together in our classroom with time for discussion and activities around the theme of the book.
I think "Little House in the Big Woods" is a good start for third grade novel reading. It not only is a timeless children's book, but it provides an insight into a historical time in our nation and what it was like to be a child in the past. I think reading a good novel can be a springboard into future reading.
I'm also excited about supplemental activities to do while reading the story that include social studies, science, and art curriculum. Reading this novel together as a class will promote fluency, teamwork, and a love for reading. Thank you for supporting our efforts to create independent readers!
Budgets are tight, but students still need to be challenged to grow and stretch their horizons.
I want to partner with you to allow students to read beyond the textbook. They will remember a good story for the rest of their lives. Please help us provide a novel in the classroom that will be used for years to come. This is a book that will not go out of style!
