Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in our school community (grades 9-12) are wonderfully unique! They encompass a variety of backgrounds, beliefs, and ideas all of which help create a diverse learning environment.
Many of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and do not have access to the privileges that many teenagers take for granted.
Our students, like all students, deserve learning opportunities and access to information to help them become successful, contributing members of society. Our students are full of passion, energy, and excitement. They take pride in their successes, especially when overcoming obstacles.
My Project
I would like my students to be able to access a wide variety of characters through our Young Adult Literature course. While we do have a decent selection now, we are somewhat limited and I would really like all students to be able to find books that excite them and that are different from books found in traditional English courses.
I want my students to not only be able to see themselves in the literature that they read I also want them to be able to develop empathy for people who are different from them.
Reading literature helps develop a person's emotional intelligence and I want my students to learn from the variety of characters they encounter in the books that they read. The addition of these books to our collection will add variety, excitement, and important opportunities for identity connections!
