Have you ever wanted to interact with history and help reveal history for others? In my history class, we focus on becoming historians, rather than simply listening to facts about history. In doing so, we seek to analyze and discover new facets of history, making our conclusions known to others.
My students come from many different backgrounds reflecting a vast array of ethnic heritages, languages spoken, and economic classes.
Yet, they come together forming an amazing student body, passionate about learning. They have shown to their teachers time and time again that they accept academic challenges and strive to excel. My US History students are amazing individuals who seek engaging learning experiences in which they can interact with and investigate history. Each year, I have the opportunity of creating classroom activities for over 125 students that allows them to participate in critical thinking regarding our nation's past. Once they complete my course, they do not merely possess a basic knowledge of history, but now have the civic literacy skills and critical thinking ability to enable them to succeed as an adult in both society and college.
My Project
Richard Nixon in the 1980s stated, "No event in American history is more misunderstood than the Vietnam War," and this is often true for students. This project seeks to correct this unfortunate conclusion by providing students the chance to engage with the written words of those who participated in this period. As opposed to briefly reading about the Vietnam War in textbooks, students will use these memoirs to build a deep knowledge of the conflict. Class activities will be built around the readings, including discussions on the experiences of the soldiers and the other perspectives included. This in-depth exploration will help prepare students to lead oral history interviews with local Vietnam veterans as they will have a stronger understanding of the lived experience of those who participated in the Vietnam War. With these interviews, students will then submit them to the Library of Congress Veterans History Project.
Your donation to this project will help enable my students build a foundational and unique knowledge that will aid in the effort to enhance understanding about the frequently misunderstood Vietnam War.
Your generosity shown towards this project will provide my students the opportunity to learn about this complex period in our nation's history and engage meaningfully with the words of those involved in this time.
