Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 90% Latino first and second generation immigrant children who are learning Spanish formally for the first time in rigorous, Pre-AP courses. Though they have all had some experience with the language in our community and many speak Spanish at home, they do not have the grammar, reading, or writing skills to succeed as bilingual professionals. In a poor and under-funded district, they are not usually able to strengthen their natural advantage in language. By teaching them advanced Spanish, I am preparing them to stand apart from their peers in college applications and in the job force as adults. Knowing how to truly communicate in Spanish at a high level will give them the leg-up that they so desperately need.
Reading is the key to learning and improving language.
Reading teaches grammar in context, vocabulary, syntax recognition, and culture at a level that classroom lessons cannot achieve. Reading also opens students' minds to deeper thinking and the connections their brains can make while reading in different languages open their minds to see connections across subjects and with the world around them. My students need to read, and my department has a goal to get books into our classes!
My Project
Reading opens students' minds beyond the classroom. Through reading, they can see and experience language while understanding new vocabulary in context and making connections about how language functions on a deeper level.
Reading in Spanish allows students to improve all of their language skills while also getting a glimpse into the culture, history, and people of the language.
By becoming better readers in Spanish, students improve their overall reading skills, and they can take what they learn with them to other subjects as well as into their lives beyond school.
By reading literature and grappling with tough questions about culture and society, students prepare themselves for the global society we live in and expand their understanding of the world around them.
