My Students

My students are such a wonderful group of hard working and motivated fifth graders. Their interests vary from loving to learn about the different ecosystems in science class to working on extremely challenging math problems or working on high level reading comprehension skills!

No matter what their academic level is, all of my students work to challenge themselves!

It is so exciting to watch the high achievers gain knowledge that is beyond comprehension for a 10 year old! It is even more motivating to see a struggling learner determined to solve problems of a difficult level because they also want to "accept" a challenge and succeed.

My Project

In order to increase global awareness within my classroom and nurture my students' empathy and awareness to diversity, I created a Social Justice Unit.

My goals for this unit are to provide a rigorous nonfiction text for my students to dissect, discuss, analyze pivotal events in our history, increase global awareness and gain an understanding of others’ struggles.

The novel Freedom Walkers by Russell Freedman would be a key piece of literature to incorporate into this unit. It would enable me to create tiered activities for my students to meet the needs of varying levels of learners.

This unit has been such a success with my class, and I know that the addition of this book would make it a richer learning experience for them.
