Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Children need access to engaging stories that capture their attention, imagination, and interest to provide a life-long love of reading. These engaging storytelling kits are what they have been searching for!

My students are Kindergarten students with mild to moderate learning disabilities.

They are interested in learning, enjoy coming to school, and always try their best. I love being a Kindergarten teacher, as Kindergarten is such a fun time in school for a child because they are generally happy to be in school, learning and interacting with friends. I want to provide the best learning experience possible for them so they want to continue to participate in school and become life-long learners. I have high expectations for my students and believe given the right learning environment with engaging, hands-on learning opportunities, all children can learn regardless of their disability. It's so rewarding to see how much they grow academically and socially from the beginning to the end of the school year. My school is a K-5 elementary school where 88% of the students participate in a free or reduced-price lunch program.

My Project

Providing fun and engaging hands-on learning opportunities, combined with music and movement are a part of the daily routine in my Kindergarten Special Day class. My students have a very limited attention span, therefore require short curriculum-based learning activities that provide access to common core standards. At times, it can be very challenging to keep them engaged, yet learning the material required, when you don't have the appropriate tools to provide access to the curriculum. Reading comprehension is the skill that my students experience the greatest difficulty with. I believe these storytelling activity kits will engage my students in literature and allow them to actively participate in learning key story elements. Having the storage rack and storytelling props to discuss characters, setting, and parts of the story, as well as the books and activity cards, are going to make story time a part of the day to look forward to!

The donations of these storytelling activity kits and storage rack will increase student access to reading comprehension skills, engagement in literature and understanding of key story elements.

They will also provide them with confidence in their reading comprehension abilities, a new love for literature that encourages them to apply themselves through active participation in literature based learning activities.
