My students need biography books and Social Studies readers to correlate to our upcoming Social Studies unit.

Some of my students come to me in the morning without having a meal since lunch the previous day. Other students come from homes where no English is spoken whatsoever. Some students come to me exhausted because they have been up all night babysitting their younger siblings. In some cases, my classroom is the most stability these kids see.
Knowing all of the trials and tribulations my kids encounter daily, I try and give them the most nurturing and positive environment I can offer.
With all of the obstacles my kids face every day, they always come into my classroom eager to learn with big smiles on their faces. All children are capable of being successful in school; we just need to give them the opportunity to do so.
My students question me every single day. One of the biggest questions I am asked is, "Why do we need to know this?" This especially holds true during Social Studies. Many kids question why we need to learn about the past and what we can learn from the people who lived before us. Our upcoming Social Studies unit opens their eyes to the reasons why it is important to learn the events that happened before our time.
Our next Social Studies unit is on Leadership, and I hope to give my students rich text to allow them to learn about the many great leaders our country has had.
Students are required to learn about Martin Luther King Jr., Jackie Robinson, Juliette Gordon Low, and Jimmy Carter, and what characteristics made these people leaders. My grade level expands on these leaders and allows students to explore leaders of their choice, who they normally may not have the chance to learn about in the classroom.
In years past, I have had students study everyone from Ruby Bridges to Muhammad Ali. It is amazing to see these students explore the many important people that have changed the course of history in our country. I have students who still come to my classroom today and talk to me about the leader they studied. I have not had many books to use for this project in years past, so my hope is for this project to give students even more resources to study these people. There is so much to be learned from the people who changed our country, and my hope is to inspire my students to be like the leaders they will be learning about.
