My inspiring 6th graders are a diverse, determined and passionate group of young people. They come to school with their full hearts, heaps of creativity and compelling stories to share.
They work incredibly hard, but face consistent challenges.
At our school, 96% of students qualify for free and reduced lunch, and we have a high homeless and highly mobile population.
The majority of our students are learning English as a second language, and 92% are students of color. They are all capable of doing amazing things and contributing mightily to our world.
My Project
One of our units of study in 6th grade social studies is modern immigration to Minnesota. In it, we study reasons people leave their homelands for Minnesota or, more broadly, the United States. Many of our students have their own stories of immigration, but in our current climate many are reluctant to share.
'Refugee' will help our students to better understand the refugee experience and tap their empathy.
The book follows 3 different young people from different time periods, describing 3 distinct refugee stories. A class set of this historical novel will help us access information in an engaging, adventurous way.
