Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What kind of learner are you? Most of my students are VISUAL learners, so it's hard for them to comprehend novels and plays that are read out loud to them. A tried and true solution: Watch the movie as we read!
My students attend a high-poverty charter school in a major city in Texas.
They, like most students, exist in a world where their senses are highly stimulated. Reading by itself is often boring to most of them. In my experience, showing a film version of the novel or play reinforces understanding and helps students to engage in what we are learning. Films will also be extremely helpful to the large population of English Language Learners.
My Project
Shakespeare did not write plays for us to read together as a class. He wrote them to be performed; to be seen and heard! We will view the film versions of "Hamlet" and "Much Ado About Nothing" as we read, and watch "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare: Abridged" after we finish as a reward.
"The Shooting of John Lennon" is an excellent engagement piece to "The Catcher in the Rye" while the documentary about the Holocaust will precede our reading of "Night".
Finally, we will watch and analyze "Dead Poets Society" as a text in and of itself as a beginning to our poetry unit.
Each of these films will help my students become excited about what we are studying and will help the subjects come alive!
I want my students to read and appreciate classic novels, drama, and poetry, but most of them would rather watch TV or play video games.
Showing these films is a perfect compromise! The films will hook the students in and make literature fun again!
