My students need class sets of books to be able to participate in literature circles and class discussions. I am hoping this type of activity promotes a love of reading for my students.
After 12 years teaching 2nd grade, I will be moving to 4th grade. I will be teaching all subjects to a great mix of students. My 4th grade students will be between the ages of 9 and 10 and of all ethnicities and racial backgrounds. These students will also vary in academic levels in the different subject areas.
I am looking forward to watching my students' faces light up as they are engulfed in the love of books through literature circles.
My Project
This year my 4th grade students' reading/writing curriculum is very heavy on informational text. Students will be using different reading strategies to comprehend different types of informational texts. Additionally, they will be taught the respond to these texts and cite evidence in their writing.
I would like to promote a love of literacy in my 4th grade class by having students participate in literature circles.
Since a great percentage of their curriculum will be informational text, during their independent reading time, I'd like to expose my students to fiction text through book clubs and discussions. My idea is to have groups of 4 students reading different fiction books and having them interact with meaningful discussions about the text. After they have been reading the book for about 2 weeks, I'd like for them to present a review of the book to their classmates as to foster an interest in their book to their other classmates.
