Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In the valley where I teach, my high school students are from a rural area where agriculture is the leading economy. We are 47% socially disadvantaged but that does not stop my students from achieving success.
I am the English Language Learner teacher and many of my students speak two languages, English at school and Spanish at home.
They have limited access to books because there is no bookstore in town and the city library is not teenager friendly. Our high school library is wonderful but lacks a variety for my struggling readers.
My Project
By creating literature circles, my English Language Learners will become better readers, will learn to love literature, and will learn to speak the English language. All of this is preparatory for them passing the English Language Proficiency Assessment for California (ELPAC). They take this test each year until they have mastered the English language. By reading, this will help them to work towards a greater proficiency with the English language.
I want my students to fall in love with holding a book!
I want them to experience a new world without going anywhere but dreaming of what they are reading about. I want them to become lifelong readers!
These book titles are classics;they have high-engagement among struggling students and they will provide the needed vocabulary for my ELL students.
