Literature Circles: Finding Our Place In The World
My students need to be exposed to a variety of literature. This initial collection of 10 different titles covers multiple ability levels and topics, which will introduce my students to reading.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students continuously bemoan reading. Whether it is for an assignment, or just for leisurely pleasure, they gasp and groan when they are asked to read even the shortest of pieces.
My kiddos are middle school students in a low socio-economic neighborhood.
They are incredibly sharp when conversing, but their reading comprehension is well behind their grade level. My belief is that they have not been introduced to the "right" books to get them hooked, nor have those books been introduced and walked through in such a way to encourage them to not only understand and remember them, but also to encourage them to continue reading, independently.
My Project
I would like to introduce my students to Literature Circles, in which a small group of students tackle the same book together. These literature circles are all tied to specific themes that fit in with our state standards so as to maximize efficacy in instructional time. The novels chosen for this specific project all deal with coming of age or self discovery themes, which help to provide a lens through which my students can view their own lives as well. These novels were also chosen based upon past experience with students checking them out of the library and providing rave reviews about them.
Many of us view reading as a necessity of life, one of those activities that we are never too old or too busy to sneak in wherever we can.
Reading has shaped our lives and helped us to become better students of the world. My students do not currently see a point or purpose to reading, and it is heart breaking. With your help, we can hopefully re-emphasize just how vital reading is to development and pair my students up with novels that speak to them, and stick with them, permanently.
