Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Teaching in an under-resourced school in Compton for four years has presented me (and my students) with many challenges. In a school where more than 80% of the students are basic or far below basic in English Language Arts, the joys of both reading and writing cannot be stressed enough. This year, I am teaching a group of students who are classified as the G.A.T.E. (Gifted and Talented Education) students. My kids are so enthusiastic about reading that they fly through the books they check out of our classroom library. Unfortunately, students are unable to check out books in our modest school-wide library due to construction projects. With limited access to books at their appropriate reading levels, my students will have fewer books to read as the school year progresses. As a result, I am trying to build my classroom library with books to read during literature circles. In these circles, students self-select books and meet in small groups to discuss their reactions and interpretations of the text. My hope is that by reading and analyzing more difficult books that they like, students' higher order thinking skills will be tapped and their intrinsic love of reading will be developed.
