Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine a morning where the students are actually guiding the learning through deep discussions about literature! Our mornings begin like this on a daily basis where there are three groups of students encircling one piece of text and diving into the details within the author's message.
Our class of 28 third graders attends a low income school on the westside of Chicago.
Two thirds of the classroom was fortunate enough to stay together from second grade to third grade! They are an extremely motivated group of students who are limited in resources as far as books that they can use, take home, and bring back for further learning. They are truly a special group of students, most of whom surpassed the newly instated reading goal of Level M by the end of last year in second grade. Our goal this year is to end above a fourth grade level. The students decided to guide their reading acceleration block through literature circles designed to challenge each other. They independently lead the conversations and motivate one another to think deeply and critically about the text.
My Project
In order to achieve our new class goal, we need higher level texts to push our thinking during literature circles. The students will learn not only to think more deeply about the texts but they will develop crucial collaborative skills and listening skills that they will need for the rest of their lives.
The students asked me to find a way to get new books outside of a fundraiser at school they are currently developing.
I suggested that we ask for donors here and they are completely gracious for each of your considerations. They need your assistance in attaining these texts so that their drive and passion for reading continues to grow. This is something that they want...it is only my privilege to help them attain their goal!
