Literature Circle Groups Seek E-Readers to Access Literature
My students need 8 eReaders for reading books such as Treasure Island and Robinson Crusoe that are just not available in sets in our school library. Students are high level readers.
Many of my students are identified gifted learners who are limited by the elementary school books we have in our library. I want to expose them to higher level literature, the Classics, and poetry to expand their group reading choices to an unlimited variety of books.
I am lucky to have been chosen as the designated teacher of of the fourth grade gifted cluster.
They have read many of the popular series such as Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. I've created two literature circle groups of eight students each. They read, they have different group jobs, and they run themselves. The leader summarizes and gives the group assignments, Then there's the locater, the illustrator, the question maker, etc. who help to make the reading more comprehensible. Our school is has a diverse population of around 400 students and has a rating of "900" in the California Standards Test. We are also applying for the California Distinguished School title.
My Project
I am requesting 8 e-readers for my classroom. An e-reader would provide students with an infinite number of books at all levels and at all genres of literature. They will be able to download free and very cheap classics. Students could read in groups, as in my literature circles, or they can find a book of their own interest to read independently. Since e-readers collect and keep the books you purchased online there is unlimited space for the students' book collections which they can access at any time.
The use of E-readers will provide students with a variety books of interest at their own level with the ability to have multiple copies to read in groups.
An e-reader will save us time and money in acquiring a multitude of literature.
